Blitz brawl

A BRAWL at Berwick’s Blitz nightclub last weekend left two people injured and many more ducking for cover.
Police said the violence broke out in the early hours of Sunday morning at the popular nightspot, which is located inside Castello’s Berwick Springs Hotel.
The attack at the Clyde Road venue has raised concerns about patrons’ safety at the club and the worrying trend of violence occurring most Saturday nights.
The latest assault resulted in a 20-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man both being taken to Casey Hospital to seek treatment for cuts to the face.
The couple received the injuries after they were involved in a fight with another man.
Up to 600 partygoers flock to the club, which operates from 9pm on Saturday to about 3am Sunday, each weekend.
Regular patrons have voiced their concern over the recent increase in violence.
Blitz management did not return several calls made by the News.
Any future bust-ups at the Blitz nightclub may result in the immediate shut down of the venue for 24 hours.
The State Government introduced tough new legislation last month in a bid to combat anti-social behaviour at nightclubs and bars.
Police now have the power to immediately close a nightspot for 24 hours if trouble flares.
The new laws also allow for the banning of troublemakers from entertainment areas as well as the strengthening of liquor licensing enforcement powers.
Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan said the new laws would help stop violence in and around licensed venues.
“It is a concern that we are seeing a rise in assaults, especially in and around entertainment precincts,” Mr Donnellan said.
Victoria Police crime figures released in September revealed a 20 per cent increase in assaults in the City of Casey over the past year.
Last week Victoria Police introduced a permanent task force to combat street assaults and anti social behaviour in some of Melbourne’s most popular nightspots.
Although the Safe Streets Task Force will focus on inner city hot spots, police say it may venture out to the suburbs if needed.
The unit will operate each Friday and Saturday night.
