THE action was hot on the pitch but the sportsmanship off the field made the ninth friendship soccer championship in Doveton an event to remember.
Waratah Reserve was a scene of colour and excitement as 276 players from 16 special schools across Victoria participated in the annual event.
The local hope was Doveton Special Soccer School and the team that sent players to Germany to compete in a World Cup event won the division one championship.
The home team took out the championship in a nail biting 3-2 penalty shoot-out win.
Emerson School in Dandenong competed well and won the division five championship.
Doveton coach and event organiser Carlos Loyola said the day was a great success with all players, support staff and spectators enjoying the soccer tournament.
“Seeing the enjoyment of these 276 children is worth every cent that is spent in organising the event,” Mr Loyola said.
