Assess risk of diabetes

CASEY residents are urged to assess their risk of type two diabetes during National Diabetes Week.
Diabetes Australia and Vision 2020 Australia have joined forces for a new campaign from 10 to 16 July urging people to asses their risk for developing the disease.
According to Diabetes Australia, about 275 Australians develop type two diabetes every day.
Gembrook MP Brad Battin assessed his risk of type two diabetes with the simple Australian Type 2 Diabetes Risk Assessment Tool and was surprised by the result.
Despite having no family history of diabetes, Mr Battin had a risk factor of eight, falling in the intermediate-risk category.
“I was surprised to learn I have a one-in-50 chance of developing type two diabetes,” Mr Battin said.
“I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to assess their risk and see what action they can take to reduce their chance of developing type two diabetes. Up to 60 per cent of cases of diabetes can be prevented, so it is important we take action.”
