HOLDING up the cup for another year, Fountain Gate’s Youth Girls proved too mighty for Hampton Park on a special day between the local South East Juniors rivals.
The annual Breast Cancer Awareness Cup has become a prized day on the calendar for Fountain Gate and Hampton Park’s Youth Girls teams and this year’s foray lived up to its billing.
Hard fought in the best possible spirit, the Redbacks and Gators slammed into bone-rattling tackles and battled gallantly to find out who would take the trophy in 2016.
Neck and neck throughout the clash, it boiled down to a fourth-term goal from Sharni Conroy-Green (three goals) to give the Gators a 6.8(44) to 5.2(32) triumph.
Kaitlynn Bader (three goals) also starred for Fountain Gate while Hampton Park’s Michaela Adair (three goals) also impressed on the big stage.
But the big winner was the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BNCA) with the sides rattling the tin to support a cause bigger than any game of football – to battle breast cancer and instil the next generation of young women with the necessary knowledge about the illness.
“It’s been going for six years and it’s hugely popular and really good following,“ Fountain Gate JFC president Rachel Wilson said. “We have so many members and family members affected by this, so it’s a wonderful way to acknowledge and support our extended family by supporting this cause.
“The girls love it, it’s hugely successful in bringing in and uniting the clubs across the league.“
Narre Warren South MP Judith Graley presented the cup to Fountain Gate and she said it was the best match played in this series between the Gators and Redbacks she’s seen over the years.
