VICROADS has stated that it won’t support the relocation of a roundabout entry to Berwick Springs estate without community support.
There has been a large backlash from residents since they learned that the proposed re-location of the roundabout at Greaves Road and Berwick Springs Promenade would take out the landscaped bluestone wall entrance to the up-market housing estate.
In an email to residents, a staff member from Narre Warren South MP Judith Couacaud Graley’s office stated that VicRoads wouldn’t participate “until the City of Casey has done the right thing and obtained the support of the local community”.
“The City of Casey should have properly informed and engaged with local residents about the… roundabout upgrade before approaching VicRoads to get the roundabout re-located,” it said.
The impasse between Casey council, VicRoads and Melbourne Water doesn’t seem to be resolved.
When asked about VicRoads’ stance, Casey Mayor Sam Aziz said it was an example of the roads authority “passing the buck”.
“It’s not our roundabout. VicRoads needs to make the decision, and so does Melbourne Water.”
Cr Aziz re-affirmed the council’s support for the residents’ concerns.
The council resolved in November to request that the State Government and Alira developer Moremac Property Group investigate a roundabout proposal that would mean the Berwick Springs entrance would not have to be demolished.
Exasperated resident Michael Ball said the argument was “going around in circles” even though both VicRoads and Casey seemed supportive.
“It has been going like this for more than a month.”
Residents have organised a community information session at the Berwick Springs lake on 5 December at 7pm.
