Students probe minister over IR laws

By Glen Atwell
VICTORIAN Attorney General Rob Hulls visited Narre Warren South P-12 College on Wednesday to encourage students to be aware of their workplace rights.
The Industrial Relations Minister told students that it was important for young people to know their rights in the new industrial relations climate.
“Research shows young people are at risk of being exploited under WorkChoices because they have the least experience in negotiating pay and conditions,” he said.
After taking questions from the students, Mr Hulls reminded the audience there were publications available, such as WorkChoices: What Parents and Young People Should Know, to help young people make informed decisions at work.
“They provide information on who to contact about appropriate wage rates and conditions, and they remind parents they must consent to workplace agreements made with children under the age of 18,” Mr Hulls said.
College principal Ross Miller said the year 10 and 11 students that attended the discussion asked Mr Hulls some great questions.
“The students didn’t just accept what Mr Hulls said, but asked probing questions and got the extra details they wanted,” he said.
“Mr Hulls answered every question with depth and interest.”
Mr Hulls was impressed with the scope of the students’ questions, according to Mr Miller.
“The students who asked the questions are studying subjects like politics and legal studies, so they are well informed,” he said.
