Trees for future

By Callan Date
GREEN is seen as the new black and Casey residents have a chance to help out the environment later this month during National Tree Day.
Hallam, Eumemmerring and Cranbourne will be just a few of the official sites locals can attend and plant one of more than 1.6 million trees throughout Australia.
National Tree Day was established just over 10 years ago with about 12 million trees and shrubs being planted by more than one million volunteers.
Friends of Frog Hollow Group secretary Stephen Hallet said everyone was welcome to attend the event at Gunns Reserve, Hallam, and be involved in planting a tree.
Friends of Eumemmerring Creek will gather at Doveton Scout Hall, at the corner of Laurel Avenue and Paperbark Drive, with locals encouraged to come down on the day.
A barbecue lunch and drinks will be provided with volunteers encouraged to bring gardening gloves, a hat and appropriate footwear.
Chisholm Institute Cranbourne campus will be the third site in Casey to hold an official event.
Officials say the site where trees will be planted is extremely muddy so gumboots or boots are required.
Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan also encouraged locals to take part in the fun at one of the sites.
“The benefit of planting one single tree is good but if everyone was to plant a tree, it would be absolutely fantastic for our environment,” Mr Donnellan said.
“It is very important that everyone shows interest in our environment and takes every opportunity to do their bit to assist in improving our environment for our future and for the future of our children,” he said.
National Tree Day is on Sunday, 29 July, with the school day on Friday, 27 July.
