Miners dig out a victory

BERWICK Miners Gridiron team played Southern Seahawks on Saturday in Frankston and came away with a win coming from behind in the second half.
With a number of injured players from the previous game sidelined, the Miners had to play out of position. It was a tough struggle for the Miners in the first quarter as the Seahawks scored the first touchdown and converted the extra points. The Miners hit back with excellent blocking by the offensive line and running by rookie running back Daniel D’Souza, who drove the ball downfield, putting the Miners on the scoreboard for the first of the game. At half-time the Miners trailed 6-10.
In the second half the Miners’ coaches, Dale Warren, Tony Aldridge and Darren Shaw, decided to add grunt and threw in Miners veteran John Fuchs. Aggressive running by Fuchs and Shahid Malimar eventually put the Miners in front. A touchdown by Malimar was followed by a pass from quarterback Jamie Stafford to Sam Walker for the extra point.
Throughout the Miners’ defence played hard, which stopped the Seahawks from scoring in the second half. The Miners finished with a touchdown pass from Stafford to wide receiver Cameron Neale to seal the match.
Scores: Miners 20 d Seahawks 12.
