Young Doves fall short

DOVETON’S seniors fielded a young side against Pakenham and the Doves’ inexperience showed in a seven-point loss. The Doves started flat, allowing Pakenham to take a four-goal lead into the first break.
The Doves bounced back strongly, kicking seven goals to two in the second quarter and taking a two-point lead at half-time. The remainder of the game was a great struggle between two strong teams but the Doves missed a couple of late goal opportunities and could not get over the line.
Clint Wilson played a great game in the ruck and big man Ricky Hayes was strong in defence. Debutante Shannon Henwood played an outstanding first game, showing courage and kicking two goals for the Doves. Other goalkickers were David George, Ryan Hendy and Michael Gardner, who finished with two goals each.
Scores: Doveton 13.9.87 lost to Pakenham 13.16.94.

Best for the Doves was Jarrod Christopher, who kicked five goals as a crumbing forward. Pete Dye proved how dangerous he is up forward, kicking two goals along with Jason McCloy, Christian Egan and Glenn Hamilton. On-baller Shannon Clarke played a great game after being dropped and did his senior selection prospects no harm.
Scores: Doveton 19.7.121 d Pakenham 7.7.49.

The thirds had their third win in a row, a mammoth 142-point triumph over Pakenham, and finally got back in the top five. The young Doves got a flying start, kicking nine goals to none in the first quarter and never giving their opponents a glimpse of victory. From here the Doves outscored Pakenham in every quarter and finished strongly with seven goals in the last. The star of the day was Daniel Zajac, who finished with a career-best 10 goals and many marks. He was aided by Cory Grant, who kicked four goals, and Ryan Pearson, who kicked three. James Arundale played another good game in the ruck and was one of the catalysts in the Doves’ big victory.
Scores: Doveton 25.14.164 d Pakenham 3.4.22.
