Boys bloom in garden project

4. 4.

STUDENTS at an Endeavour Hills primary school are busy sowing the seeds of success.
Last Thursday, two all- boy classes at Mossgiel Park Primary School enjoyed an educational visit from representatives from Bunnings Warehouse in Dandenong.
Since last year, the school has been trialing the classes to improve student behaviour and classroom attendance.
The green-thumbed grade 3/4 boys class has been busy learning about native plants this term, while also focusing on measurements and maths.
Last week, the Bunnings representatives taught students how to care for native plants and showed the boys how to create their own garden from scratch. Project coordinator Royce Dayton said students from the year 5/6 boys class had been busy rejuvenating the school’s vegetable garden as well as working on its pick-and-eat garden, orchard and berry plants.
Mr Dayton said the school had found that boys learnt differently from girls.
He said the new initiative allowed staff to teach their curriculum in a different way, and provided male students with hands-on and practical learning opportunities to stimulate and maintain their interest in learning.
Mr Dayton said students had greatly enjoyed the Bunnings visit and took a great deal of pride in their new gardens.
