HUNDREDS of steam engine and vintage engine enthusiasts attended the 90th Lake Goldsmith Steam Rally last weekend.
Keen interest was shown in the Sunshine Shed, west of Ballarat, and display, owned by Fred Mynard of Hampton Park.
The Sunshine Shed exhibition has eight immaculately restored engines dated to the early 20th century.
Fred has worked on the restoration of engines since he was a boy.
“I loved playing with toys when I was young,” he said. “Now I just play with bigger toys.”
The Lake Goldsmith Steam Preservation Association draws thousands of visitors to its twice-a-year rallies and is one of the biggest working vintage engine museums in Victoria.
Hundreds of restored steam and combustion engines on display represent thousands of painstaking hours searching for parts and restoring the engines to pristine condition.
Enthusiasts from all over Victoria have their own lock-up sheds, with fully equipped workshops, and a major display of some of the oldest steam engines in the world can be seen in the Founders Shed.
The club began in 1941 when a group of farmers held working steam traction engine shows for American servicemen who were in the area for rest and recreation.
The farmers continued to meet infrequently, until in the 1960s the present site was established and the club formalised.
Contact can be made with the club on 5349 5512.
