SPRING has certainly sprung in Doveton and Eumemmerring with green-thumbed locals encouraged to enter a community gardening competition.
The Doveton and Eumemmerring Housing and Environment Action Group is calling out to novice gardeners and all residents who enjoy spending time in their glorious yards.
It doesn’t matter whether residents live in public, private or rental housing – everyone is welcome to enter.
The gardening competition will run until November with many categories on offer.
These include the tidiest front garden, best spring garden and most improved front garden.
The group say they are committed to improving the environment and surroundings of Doveton and Eumemmerring and encouraged all local residents to improve the streets, homes, gardens and nature strips around their suburb to foster a positive image of the community.
First prize is a $250 Bunnings voucher, second prize a $100 voucher and third prize a $50 voucher.
Winners will be announced at the Neighbourhood Renewal community get together on 28 November.
Long-time Doveton residents Helen and Les Boyes have already signed up for the competition and have been busy sprucing up their front lawn.
Mr Boyes has been an avid gardener for decades, working as a gardener and in nurseries for much of his working life.
The 70-year-old’s legs are now riddled with arthritis and devoted wife Helen has taken over the gardening duties.
But Mr Boyes still maintains the lawns and greatly enjoys doing the edges.
The pair has lived in Doveton for 37 years and believes the gardening competition will be a great event for the local community.
Mrs Boyes said they were now waiting for their roses and lillies to bloom and encouraged other residents to sign up for the competition.
Doveton and Eumemmerring Neighbourhood Renewal and the House Action Group have helpful gardening tips to get entrants started.
