TWO communities are in mourning following the death of respected Narre Warren South man Peter George in a motorcycle crash on Saturday.
Mr George was killed while taking part in a group ride with the Cranbourne-based Ulysses Club Shearwaters branch.
The 52-year-old failed to take a sweeping left-hand bend on the Great Alpine Road, near Walsh’s Cutting in Victoria’s east, and crashed down an embankment.
He suffered severe injuries in the collision and was transported by air ambulance to Bairnsdale Hospital, but died on the way.
Mr George’s wife, Joan Stanford, was on the ride when he crashed.
She said her husband was ride leader for the three-day trip and had organised most of the getaway for the 35 people who took part.
“We are all just shocked and stunned,” Ms Stanford said.
Fellow riders completed the final two days of the journey in honour of Mr George.
“It is what Peter would have wanted,” she said.
Mr George was well known in the local business community through his involvement in the Narre Warren Business Network International.
He also owned and operated Dezyn1 Computer Services in Narre Warren.
Ms Stanford said the two shared a passion for motorcycles.
“He loved being on his bike. He picked his new one up just after the New Year.
“We did club rides together and we would do our own rides with just the two of us,” she said.
Ms Stanford said the father-of-one was a pillar of strength during her recent battle with cancer.
“He was very, very supportive. He has been my rock and tower of strength.
“I have had great support from the Ulysses Club since.
“`They can’t do enough for me. There is so much to be done with winding up the business and they have been great,” Ms Stanford said.
Mr George’s funeral service will take place on Tuesday, 18 March at the Boyd Chapel, Springvale Botanical Crematorium at 10.30am.
In lieu of flowers, the family requested any donations go to the Cranbourne Information and Support Service.
