CRANBOURNE Harness Racing Club held a successful meeting on Saturday with some exciting on-track performances complemented by the presentations to last season’s club premiership winners.
Clyde’s Jayne Davies and her stable driver Chris Alford were awarded the Trainer and Driver of the Year trophies, while the Concession Driver of the Year was Greg Sugars.
Track specialist Master Harley secured Horse of the Year honours.
On the track, Bendigo-trained pacer Prince Bonton provided his trainer Tony Dillon with the second leg of a training double when successful in the final event on the program.
The eight-year-old gelding took out the second heat of the Claiming Masters as a short-priced favourite and will now go into the $20,000 final of the series at Moonee Valley on this Friday.
Earlier in the evening, the Dillon-trained Mister Rhys won the feature race on the card, the Terry ‘Brutus’ Smith Memorial, named in honour of the former Richmond Football Club premiership player and harness racing enthusiast.
Smith lost his battle with cancer this time last year, and a number of former Richmond greats were on hand at Saturday’s meeting to witness the first running of what it is hoped will become an annual event.
