OATLANDS Primary School students gathered for their annual Remembrance Day service last week.
The ceremony opened with the school choir singing the National Anthems of Australia, the UK, the USA and New Zealand.
Several prominent local figures attended the service including United States Consul General Earl Irving and HMAS Cerberus commanding officer Captain David Garnock.
Following the playing of the Last Post, the special guests and students laid flowers at the foot of the flags of the four nations.
Student leaders Taylah Mackie and Daniel Bushby along with prep student Jack Stacey completed readings appropriate to the occasion including the poem Why Are They Selling Poppies, Mummy.
Oatlands principal Stuart Daly said the ceremony was an ideal way for students to learn the importance of Remembrance Day.
He said a special part of the service was a tribute to WW I soldier Leslie Charles Focken who was killed in battle.
“Each year the Remembrance Day ceremony forms a very important part of the curriculum at Oatlands Primary School and today’s service proved a fitting tribute to Leslie Focken, whose niece Lyn Athan attended the ceremony,” Mr Daly said.
