NOMINATIONS for the 2008 Casey Citizens of the Year Awards are being called for.
Outstanding members of society have the chance to be officially recognised and thanked for their contribution to their local community. There are four award categories and one group category for the most outstanding community event of 2007.
The award categories are:
· Casey Citizen of the Year
· Casey Young Citizen of the Year
· Casey Senior Citizen of the Year
· Casey Non-resident of the Year
· Casey Community Event of the Year
Nominations for individual awards close on 9 November and for the Casey Community Event of the Year on 4 January 2008.
Current Casey Citizen of the Year and Doveton resident Margaret Fairhurst said she never thought she would be nominated let alone be awarded the honour.
“It was a big surprise at the time and receiving the award has since enabled me to be involved in a wide range of special events and ceremonies happening around Casey, experience new things and meet people,” she said.
Ms Fairhurst has volunteered her time with the local Scout group for years and is an active part of the Doveton-Eumemmerring Neighbourhood Renewal Project.
City of Casey manager of community development Janette Green said that often those nominated for the citizen awards were similarly surprised that their everyday efforts to help their community were being formally recognised.
“The 2008 Citizen of the Year Awards is a great opportunity for the wider community and council to acknowledge those who make time in their lives to make time for others. I encourage residents to consider nominating someone who has made a difference to the Casey community, and give them a chance to be recognised,” Ms Green said.
A community selection panel comprised of community representatives and the mayor (or mayor’s delegate) assesses all eligible nominations, assisted by council officers and the recommendations are reported to council.
In recognition of the outstanding contribution to the community by the nominees the council acknowledges them at an Australia Day dinner and Casey Citizens Awards Ceremony, held on Australia Day 26 January 2008.
