MORE than 3000 children made a splash this week as they took the plunge in a water safety program at local pools.
The youngsters took part in Water Safety Week at the Narre Warren and Hampton Park Swimland centres and learnt the finer points of safe behaviour around water.
Casey mayor Kevin Bradford joined students from Rangebank Primary School at the official launch of the program.
With the warm weather fast approaching the program was an ideal reminded for both adults and children about how to play it safe by the water this summer.
Former marathon swimmer and Swimland manager Tammy van Wisse said the children took part in a range of activities throughout the week including reach rescues, treading water and learning how to stay afloat with clothes on.
Parents were also encouraged to take part in the action and were made aware of the three key points – supervise your child at all times, familiarise your child with water and learn resuscitation – to water safety.
More tips on how to have a safe and enjoyable summer at Victoria’s many pools, beaches and waterways is available at the Play it Safe by the Water website at www.watersafety.vic.gov.au.
