CASEY’S Youth Eco-Challenge program has won the Young Leaders category in the 2008 Keep Australia Beautiful Sustainable Cities Award for Victoria.
The annual award recognises some of the best environmental achievements in the community.
The Youth Eco-Challenge program is the first of its kind in Australia and provides young people with the knowledge to become local leaders in sustainable living practices. The program also focussed on developing energy and water saving ideas for homes and schools.
The Young Leaders award category promotes youth engagement on environmental challenges.
City of Casey mayor Janet Halsall said the innovative Youth Eco-Challenge Program was an outstanding success.
“Winning this award is confirmation that the City of Casey is leading the way in local government,” she said.
The program saw 25 of its volunteers invited as special guests of Victorian Premier John Brumby at a global business forum which was attended by former United States Vice President Al Gore.
