A PATCHWORK quilt has benefited those with breast cancer in more ways than one.
Last Friday the Narre Warren based Patchwork Friends presented a $3000 cheque to Doreen Akkerman from the Victorian Cancer Council after recently raffling their latest patchwork creation.
But in another special twist the raffle winner was Jean Matthews, a breast cancer survivor from Frankston.
This is the fifth quilt the group has auctioned off for charity in the past decade and the second to help fund breast cancer research.
Sheila Young, 72, of Berwick, is a member of Patchwork Friends and is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
She said two other women in the group were cancer survivors, making the cause special to the group and they were delighted with the amount of money raised.
“We have a small group of contacts and we did not expect to raise that much money,” Ms Young said.
“We raffled our last one off for $1500.
“We are just thrilled to bits that we raised so much, it is absolutely great. We were also thrilled when the ticket came out of the draw and it went to Jean Matthews. It was just fantastic as she had breast cancer eight years ago,” she said.
