SCHOOL council members were commended for their work in schools, during a Casey mayoral reception at the Balla Balla Centre, Cranbourne last Friday.
River Gum Ward councillor Janet Halsall told guests that many people served on school councils even after their children had left school.
She said the City of Casey was a better place to live because of this type of community volunteerism.
Narre Warren South MP Judith Grayley said she was amazed at the amount of work involved in running a school.
“People contribute in a significant way to student education by involvement on a school council and young people benefit by seeing by example the work adults are doing.
“I also thank the City of Casey for holding this reception,” she said.
River Gum Ward councillor Wayne Smith told guests that they should not underestimate the work they did for schools.
Casey mayor Colin Butler told guests of honour that their role was important, not just to their schools, but also to the wider community.
“Everything you do that strengthens your school strengthens our community and I sincerely thank you for your efforts.
“We are fortunate to have volunteers, such as those of you who could be here this evening, and many others, prepared to become School Council members, providing the advisory and management support that ensures our schools are able to meet the needs of children.
“Many people have served their school council for many years and most are involved in sub-committees such as education and policy, finance, fund raising, building and grounds, community relations, and other areas such as outside school hours care and canteen.”
Cr Butler said school council members not only gave time, but energy, wisdom, and vision.
“They set key directions, and ensure the development of a thriving learning community.
“Their ideas lead to school improvement and their energy makes things happen.
“This is a valuable role you play and I want to assure you that it is appreciated.
“Casey is proud of the work that you do on your school council, and your demonstrated commitment to our schools, our children, our community and our future,” he said.
