NARRE Warren North Primary School students certainly know the importance of saving water.
It has become one of the first to register to become an accredited Water – Learn It! Live It! school under an innovative new program run by South East Water.
The school is working with South East Water to integrate water conservation into its curriculum and reduce water use throughout the grounds.
The program is part of the State Government’s Our Water Our Future behaviour change campaign to educate Victorians on the importance of saving water.
South East Water provides schools wanting to integrate water conservation into the curriculum with a Water-Learn It! Live It! resource kit, suited to both primary and secondary schools.
South East Water managing director, Dennis Cavagna, said the program helped to save water by providing the latest knowledge to help schools raise awareness and reduce water consumption at both home and school.
The kit also gives teachers the resources needed to develop fun and interesting ways to teach students about saving water.
Over the past 18 months, Narre Warren North Primary School has been educating students, staff and the community on the importance of water conservation. The whole school has focused on learning about the water cycle, environmental impacts and ways to save water.
Principal Ian Norman said the school hoped to continue to save water and had recently undertaken an audit of the school’s water consumption.
“As a school, we need to look at the recommendations of the water audit and put a plan into place to further reduce water consumption,” he said.
“We also need to continue educating and encouraging students, staff and the community to reduce their water consumption.
“One of our families generously donated a water tank to collect water from the multi-purpose room.”
Mr Cavagna said that it was not too late for other schools to register their interest in the program.
“South East Water encourages schools in the Casey area to register for the program and become an accredited Water Learn It! Live It! School,” he said.
“Schools that achieve all of the milestones will be rewarded with signs for their front fences so the whole community will know the commitment the school has made to a sustainable water future.”
