SOFTBALL is booming in the local region if the weekend action at Sweeney Reserve is any guide.
Two Narre Warren under 13 teams – the Falcons and the Kookaburras – shaped up on Saturday morning and there was nothing but smiles and laughter from the participants.
Narre Warren official Richard Barrow, who has played, coached and umpired the sport for 13 years, said there were about 70 players at the club.
“Making it fun is number one, then we teach them additional skills and try to develop a passion for the game that will keep them in the sport beyond their childhood years,” he said.
The Casey Softball Association has a strong reputation and won the local softball association of the year title against rivals from across the country in 2006.
The organisation runs an innovative program called Blast Ball, which caters for six-to-nine-year-olds and helps introduce them to the game.
