STUDENTS at the Gleneagles Campus of Eumemmerring College organised a variety of fund raising activities for Indigenous Literacy Day recently.
The funds raised will be donated to the Fred Hollows Foundation to buy books and educational resources for children in remote indigenous communities.
While the aim of the activities was to raise funds, students also raised awareness of the critical importance of literacy skills and the compounding effects of illiteracy for indigenous Australians.
Money was raised in several different ways including a 5c line up.
Each home group competed against each other by lining up the 5c pieces they had collected and measured the distance of the line. More than $1200 was raised.
“Students across all year levels have enthusiastically supported this important cause and increased the awareness of the importance of literacy skills in communities less fortunate than our own,” campus principal Sue Peddlesden said.
Organising teacher Brianna Lenders said: “It is a wonderful experience for our students to be involved in supporting an initiative such as Indigenous Literacy Day and contributing in a positive way to the educational opportunities of other students.”
