Students in grip of self defence

Above: Year eight students Jenelle and Bonnie give Mr Donnellan a lesson in self-defence.
STUDENTS at an Endeavour Hills school can now feel much safer in the community after taking part in a series of self-defence workshops.
The year eight girls from Eumemmerring Secondary College’s Gleneagles campus started the self-protection program this term and boys will take the classes in term four.
Narre Warren North MP Luke Donnellan has sponsored the program.
Victorian Institute of Sport coach and self-defence trainer Tricia Clarke conducted the introductory lesson last Thursday.
Jo Tippett, coordinator of the year eight Sport Education Program, said students would learn about safety in the home, when walking and when in public places as well as what to do in emergency situations.
They would also participate in self-protection and defence activities.
“Students will learn how to avoid situations and how to be more aware,” Ms Tippett said.
She thanked Mr Donnellan for his support and sponsorship of the program.
“In offering this initiative, Gleneagles Campus is catering to the needs of students from its community and providing them with knowledge and skills applicable for use outside of school environment,” she said.
