LOCALS from around Casey flocked to the city’s Remembrance Day services on Saturday to remember those who served in war.
The weather held out for the day as onlookers paid their respects in silence to the haunting melody of the Last Post.
Tributes and readings were presented at services in Berwick and Endeavour Hills.
Berwick RSL past president Cyril Molyneux said numbers were well up on previous years with more than 200 people turning out for the Remembrance Day event held at the Cenotaph on High Street, Berwick.
“It was a very satisfactory day and we were particularly pleased to see the schools well represented,” Mr Molyneux said.
“Past president Noel Sealey gave a short address and then there was a wreath laying by various organisations.”
Endeavour Hills RSL members also paused to remember the fallen with a moving service of their own.
Remembrance Day services were also held in Cranbourne and at Pearcedale’s Cenotaph.
Cranbourne’s ceremony featured guest speaker Lieutenant Tony Halter from HMAS Cerberus and Deacon Tony Aspinall from St Agatha’s Catholic Church did the reading.
Cranbourne RSL administration officer Anne O’Sullivan said it had been a fantastic day and was she very impressed by the turnout, especially as the celebration was held on a weekend.
“The representation from the local schools was outstanding and there were nearly all joined by the school principals,” Mrs O’Sullivan said.
“It was great to see people come and remember their grandfathers.
“It was really quite touching.”
