A YOUNG Berwick writer has penned his way to a local literary prize.
First time award recipient Adrian Harper-Gomm submitted his story, The Musical Fence, to the annual Young Writers Short Story and Poetry competition run by the Friends of the Doveton Library.
The 12-year-old Brentwood Park Primary School student was presented with the award for best short story at the Doveton Library on Tuesday night.
The budding writer said he wanted to become an author specialising in children’s fantasy but was surprised at winning the competition.
“It makes me feel proud of my writing,” he said.
Adrian told the News his story stemmed from a picture he found in a newspaper.
“The picture had a person standing above a crooked fence. The fence looked like musical notes so I decided to write my story based on that,” he said.
Adrian has already made his mark in the publishing industry, having one story featured in the book Bee Cre8tive, which showcases the work of students from around Australia.
The writing competition, open to all students in the City of Casey and Cardinia Shire, had two categories, poetry and short stories, in two age groups – juniors aged eight to 12 years and seniors aged 12 to 15 years.
Competition organisers received more than 100 entries.
