Crossing warning as school returns

POLICE are warning motorists to pay extra attention when driving near schools, as children are returning to scheduled classes this week.
Drivers are urged to watch out for children crossing the roads after being dropped off from buses or cars near schools. Crossings that have not been in use over the holidays will be operating again.
Motorists are also reminded to obey the 40 kph limit operating near most schools and to ensure they comply with the traffic signs regulating designated speeds in these areas.
Police are urging parents to make sure young children walking to school for the first time by themselves or riding bikes to school have a basic understanding of road safety.
Parents are also reminded to make sure their children wear helmets if they ride their bikes to school and to ensure bikes are in good condition and safe for use on the roads.
