EVERY hour of every day someone is diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma, and it’s a chilling thought for a Narre Warren woman.
Chris McColl is taking part in this year’s World’s Greatest Shave to honour her brother-in-law Robert who died of leukaemia on Australia Day, aged 69.
Ms McColl said Robert was initially given two months to live after being diagnosed in September last year.
“My husband Warwick also passed away last year after suffering from a heart attack, so both of the deaths are my motivation to raise money and awareness,” she said.
The 60-year-old will be dyeing her hair pink for the fundraiser, which runs from 12 to 14 March, with the aim of collecting $100.
The World’s Greatest Shave is held each year to raise funds for patient care, and research into finding a cure.
More than 100,000 Australians are gearing up to shave, wax, colour or crop their hair in support of the 10,000 people who will be diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma or related blood disorders in Australia this year.
“I chose to colour my hair pink to also raise awareness for breast cancer,” she said.
This is the first time Ms McColl has taken part in the World’s Greatest Shave.
“It’s a disgusting disease and we must find a cause,” she said.
Ms McColl has sent out 60 text messages and 20 emails in the hope of collecting donations.
