A FORMER Casey councillor is rounding up the community for the upcoming Casey Homeless Sleepout event in Endeavour Hills.
Paul Richardson will camp out in the tunnel at Sydney Parkinson Reserve on Friday 20 March at 7.30pm in an effort to raise awareness about homelessness in the City of Casey.
“Everyone is welcome to take part in the event to see how it partially and temporarily feels to be homeless and have no roof over their head,” he said.
Participants are encouraged to bring a blanket, sleeping bag and torch.
City of Casey manager strategic development Liam Hodgetts said that according to the 2006 Census, in the City of Casey there were 35 people living in an improvised home, tent or sleeping out.
“The most common and apparent form of homelessness to the public eye is of course people living on the street which can often be seen in the Melbourne CBD,” he said.
“In Casey this is extremely rare.”
Council staff and organisations such as the Casey North Community Information and Support Service and the Cranbourne Information and Support Service make appropriate referrals to the Department of Human Services, who handle the issue of homelessness in Casey.
For more information about the Casey Homeless Sleepout please call Paul Richardson on 9708 0875.
