THE Berwick City Cougars raised $1300 for the McGrath Foundation at their second annual Ladies’ Day at Cyril Molyneux Reserve on Saturday.
More than 100 women – up from 75 at last year’s inaugural event – packed into the Berwick baseball venue to enjoy the Division Three contest between the Cougars and Footscray.
Berwick City officials erected a ladies-only marquee for the day and served drinks and food, while entertainment included free tattoos, a DJ, a home-run derby and a Fashions on the Diamond competition.
An announcer also commentated the game and explained the nuances of the sport.
Cougars president Paul Quinn was delighted with the turnout.
“People enjoyed themselves last year and I think this year’s event was a step up again,” he said.
“We’ve received nothing but positive feedback and everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
“The place was still pumping at 10pm and I couldn’t believe how many people were still there.
“It was a good social night and day for the club and most of the people there were friends or relatives associated with the club.”
Springfield Ward councillor Lorraine Wreford threw the ceremonial first pitch to start proceedings and Baseball Victoria chief executive Stephen Nash was also in attendance.
Quinn believes club officials have developed a successful concept, but is considering sharing the day with another club in the future.
“It’s our social event, but we’ll probably try and co-ordinate with another club to get their lady members involved in it as well,” he said.
“It’s just a great day and everyone is looking forward to next year’s event and we hope it’s bigger and better.”
