Hop in for your chip

CASEY pet owners can get their cat or dog microchipped for just $25 each this Sunday, 15 March.
Since 1 May 2007, Victorian laws require that all newly registered animals are microchipped. Reduced council registration fees apply for microchipped pets.
On Sunday, between 9am and 3pm at the Casey Civic Centre carpark a veterinarian will conduct all microchipping and pet registration will also be available. The procedure is pain-free, says Casey mayor Geoff Ablett, and it is one of the most effective ways to reunite owners with their pet should it become lost.
“A microchip, which is about the size of a grain of rice, is inserted and causes no discomfort or pain to your animal,” he said.
“The microchip contains a barcode that is linked to its owner’s contact details and confidentially recorded on the Central Animal Records Database for the life of the pet.
“This means that an animal is permanently identified Australia-wide and can be safely returned to its owner, even if its collar or council ID has come off.”
Casey’s Microchipping Day will feature a number of attractions including pet supply stalls, dog wash, petting zoo, jumping castle, animal photography and a sausage sizzle.
Pet owners who attend the event must keep their dogs on a lead at all times and their cats in cages.
