SHERIFF’S Department officers collected $41,360 in outstanding fines, via roadblocks set up by police as part of Operation CARE this week.
Police set up along Vanessa Drive in Hampton Park, as part of the ongoing blitz.
The operation, which ran from 2pm to 7pm on Tuesday, involved police from the Casey Traffic Management Unit, Casey Response Unit, general duties officers from Narre Warren, Cranbourne and Endeavour Hills and sheriff’s department officers.
Operation CARE, which has been running since January, is aimed at targeting the amount of drivers committing crime and traffic offences. Police detected six unlicensed drivers and five unregistered vehicles, and issued four defect notices for drivers with unroadworthy vehicles.
Senior Constable Allen Inderwisch from the Casey TMU said police found three probationary drivers not displaying P-plates.
Sen Const Inderwisch said one driver was also caught failing to obey a licence condition.
“We also discovered one person under the age of 26 not carrying his driver’s licence,” he said.
“We want to remind people it’s an offence for a driver under the age of 26 to not carry their licence. And there’s a $57 fine for the holder of the licence.”
Sen Const Inderwisch said the sheriffs executed 136 warrants during the operation.
“They cleaned up a total value of $41,360 in outstanding fines,” he said.
The Casey Response Unit searched 19 vehicles.
“While they didn’t find anything, police said motorists were surprised that police were searching the vehicles,” he said.
“This operation is not just a traffic one, police are also looking for drugs and illegal items.”
Operation CARE will run until the end of March.
