A SCHOOL community in Endeavour Hills is calling on Casey council to install “No U Turn” signs in an effort to crack down on dangerous driving behaviours in the area.
Teachers and parents at Thomas Mitchell Primary School are concerned for the safety of the students as drivers continually do illegal u-turns where Thomas Mitchell Drive meets Cunningham Drive.
Principal John Hurley told the News that the proposed signs should limit turns during the peak traffic times, between 8.45am and 9am and 3.30pm and 3.45pm.
Jill Robins, who has two children who attend the school, described the situation as chaotic.
“One morning a driver drove up a driveway, reversed back onto the school crossing and nearly collected the children walking to school,” she said.
“They are lazy and impatient drivers who don’t look and think.”
Ms Robins said her number one concern was the safety of the school community.
The Endeavour Hills resident supports the proposed signs, saying: “The sooner they are installed the better.”
“No one has been hit yet but we’ve had a lot of close calls.”
The City of Casey’s transport manager Paul Hamilton said that the council received a joint letter requesting “No U Turn” signs be installed along Cunningham Drive at Thomas Mitchell Primary School during last week’s council meeting.
Council officers will investigate the issue and report back to the council in April.
The officers will be assessing the operation of Cunningham Drive before responding.
