GEOFF Emery overcame a rocky start to earn a top-10 placing in round one of the 2009 Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series in Adelaide late last month.
The Narre Warren South driver misjudged the first turn in qualifying and was forced to pit after nicking a tyre bundle.
Two rival competitors then crashed into a wall to further interrupt qualifying for him as he settled for the 17th-fastest time.
But Emery roared into 10th spot in race one before a flat tyre resulted in him coming 12th in race two.
“It was a good result, but obviously we didn’t make the most of qualifying,” Emery said.
“It’s pretty easy to do (misjudge a turn). It didn’t really cause much damage to the car, but you really need to pit to check up on things like that.
“We actually got up to sixth in race two, but we had a flat tyre – I don’t know how we get all the (bad) luck.”
Emery, in his third Fujitsu V8 Supercar Series campaign and second straight, has set himself the bold goal of a top-five finish in the championship standings.
“That’s a pretty big goal, but it would be nice if we could get there,” he said.
“We have a lot of car speed now – coming from the rear of the field to the top half a dozen proves we have a fair bit of car speed, so it’s certainly achievable.”
Emery heads to Winton Motor Raceway next month for round two of the series from 1 to 3 May.
“We’ve upgraded the suspension and that seems to have made some difference and just generally, in my second year, obviously I’ll be a lot better,” he said.
“Going to the track for a second time in this car, there are obviously some gains to be made.”
