POLICE will keep a close watch on school zones this week in an effort to improve road safety as Casey students head back to school.
Acting Sergeant of the Casey Traffic Management Unit (TMU) Allen Inderwisch said police would be watching 40 km/h school zones in the City of Casey.
“Unfortunately from time to time some motorists decide that the lower speed zones don’t apply to them,” he said.
School zones operate between 8am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4pm on school days.
Police will be stepping up patrols and targeting speeding, parking offences and safety related offences. “Police are finding that drivers are double parking around schools, which is dangerous for children and other motorists,” he said. “Parents also need to make sure they teach their children to cross at the designated crossings.”
Act Sgt Inderwisch said drivers needed to take responsibility for the safety of children around schools. “Drivers need to be alert and aware in school zones,” he said.
