Women met for breakfast

TWENTY years ago, women from across the municipality met at the civic centre in Narre Warren for the council’s first International Women’s Day breakfast.
The City of Berwick, now the City of Casey, was the only local council to host a women’s day breakfast, the News reported at the time.
By then, two women had held the office of mayor in Berwick: Kirsty Lottkowitz and Lorraine Kovacs.
It was Lorraine’s idea to host the breakfast. Since then, a third woman, Janet Halsall, has served as mayor, in the City of Casey.
International Women’s Day began as an idea 100 years ago in Copenhagen. It occurs every year on 8 March because on that day in New York women took to the streets to demonstrate against harsh working conditions.
The International Women’s Day Collective wrote to Berwick Council complimenting the council for holding the breakfast.
