Casey crashes once again

By Stuart Teather
CASEY Comets’ season went from bad to worse on Saturday, with the State League Two South East side recording its second big loss in as many weeks.
After enduring an 8-0 drubbing at the hands of Malvern City last week, the Comets lost 4-1 to Diamond Valley United on Saturday at Comets Stadium.
The salt in the wound is the fact that the Comets’ only score was an own goal from Diamond Valley.
Comets’ coach Tony Saunders was understandably upset after the loss and said inexperience played a big part in the result.
“Basically some really poor defensive errors cost us goals,” he said.
“We had a lot of play after having one against us, then they went back down the other end and scored after we had a long period of play.
“It’s probably a bit of inexperience in our side, we don’t have a great deal of experience, that leadership-type role.”
The coach said confidence was low at the club on the back of successive floggings, but added that the team had been performing well at practice.
“Training has been very good, the atmosphere has been very good, we just can’t seem to bring that form on to Saturday.”
Saunders said the club was in the process of trying to get players to transfer across to the Comets in a bid to resurrect their season.
Casey is winless and on the bottom of the ladder after seven rounds, though the club is a game behind the rest of the league after its first-round match was postponed due to a stadium mix-up.
In other results, Berwick City had a 0-0 draw with Nunawading City in State League Three South East.
The clash was a crucial one with both teams locked in a group of five all within a point of each other mid-table and as a result Berwick sits in seventh, while Nunawading is a game outside the top two in fifth.
In Provisional League One South East, Doveton’s horror run continued, going down 1-4 to Old Camberwell Grammar.
The Wellers are one of the form teams of the competition and Doveton was outclassed, despite striker Leon Buhic again finding the net for the Doves.
Endeavour United had better luck, trouncing Ashburton 4-1 to record just its second win of the season.
Ashburton remains winless from seven rounds, while Doveton and United sits just above it on the ladder on five and six points respectively.
