Firies save kids in cars

By Kelly Yates
FIREFIGHTERS say they are rescuing children locked in cars on a fortnightly basis in the City of Casey.
Fourth Lieutenant Damian Baker from the Narre Warren Fire Brigade told the News that the brigade received two calls in the past week in relation to children being left in cars.
The firefighters received a call on 22 May about several children locked in a car parked on Web Street in Narre Warren.
According to Lt Baker, when the firefighters arrived at the scene the car had gone.
The following day the firefighters were called to an incident at Warren Park Place in Narre Warren South, after a women accidentally locked her keys and a three-year-old child in the car.
Lt Baker said the firefighters smashed one of the car’s windows in an effort to free the distressed child.
Casey Inspector Andrew Miles said there was no specific penalty notice to issue to people who left children in cars.
He said when the police were called to an incident they often took into account circumstances such as location, weather and age.
“Police may interview the parent or person responsible and possibly consider criminal charges,” Insp Miles said.
Police are urging people not to leave children locked in cars.
