CASEY council has thrown its support behind Hampton Park residents who fear for their children’s safety when going to and from school.
About 300 residents signed a petition in hopes that traffic lights would be installed on Hallam Road near St Kevin’s Primary School.
Principal Tom Coghlan said he was worried about what tragedies could occur in the future if the lights were not installed.
“It’s a safety issue for not only the 660 students that attend the school, but others as well, including the crossing supervisor who has to stop traffic on the busy roads,” he said.
“We are fortunate that there haven’t been any injuries or accidents yet.”
Last week, the council said it was not responsible for resurrecting traffic lights, but accepted the petition presented by River Gum Ward Cr Wayne Smith.
Casey councillors agreed to support the residents’ request by writing to VicRoads and local MPs in hopes they would take action.
Cr Smith said he agreed with Hampton Park residents that the installation of traffic lights was necessary.
“Hallam Road is one of the busiest roads in Hampton Park,” Cr Smith said.
“It’s not only dangerous at pick up and drop off times at the school, but it’s busy all day. It’s concerning because there are also a number of elderly people who also live on the street. Traffic lights would be the only way to cross the road safely.”
Mr Coghlan said he was pleased that the council was advocating for Hampton Park residents’ needs.
“We are really hoping to get the traffic lights and pleased that Cr Wayne Smith and Casey Council are supporting us,” he said.
