Cannons leapfrog to score top four

THE Casey Cannons’ men’s Metro Three South side grabbed its top-four chance, leapfrogging Eastern Christians Hockey Organisation with a come-from-behind 3-1 win.
Casey started poorly against the talented ECHO outfit in its bid to win five on the trot.
Staunch defence from Adam Beckwith and Andrew Axton could not prevent ECHO cracking the first goal past energetic ’keeper Rob Strang from a penalty corner.
A green card to the goal-hungry Craig Moore seemed to spark the side into action, with some swift play set up by captain Rodney Tredoux and Steven Randall leading to the first of the match for the young striker.
The score was one-all at half-time and Tredoux implored his players to be more disciplined and do the team things to ensure victory.
The Cannons put in a vastly improved second half and goals to Blaine Cridge and James Doble put the match beyond doubt.
A high-scoring fixture in Metro One East saw Casey get over the line 5-4 against Southern United.
There wasn’t much defence being played as both sides traded blows in an entertaining end-to-end match.
Blake Edwards controlled the game from the middle and was rewarded with a double, as was Josh Hondow.
A Matt Gittus strike rounded out the scoring for the Cannons.
The women’s State League Three team fought out an entertaining 3-2 win over Baw Baw. Captain Jill Fitzgerald continued her good form with a conversion, as did the evergreen Debbie Jacobs and Claire Rundell.
Metro One South did it easily, belting MCC 5-1.
Liz Nicholl’s hot form continued as she put two past the ’keeper, while vice-captain Sue Barling, Laura Morris and Rebecca Hodson all hit the back of the board.
Metro Three South drew 0-0 with Baw Baw, while the fourths put in a top effort to take a point from their game against Hawthorn.
Jacque Kelly was the heroine for her side, slotting the goal.
The men’s firsts suffered a reality check, with a 10-0 shellacking at the hands of top-of-the-table State League Three heavyweight Hockey Geelong.
