World event won with a bang

A BERWICK student with a talent for communicating big-bang science has won an international competition that will see him participate in one of the world’s most anticipated science events.
IT student Phil Owen from Narre Warren will go to Geneva in November, where science boffins are hoping to recreate the moments after the big-bang by forcing multiple sub-atomic particles to collide.
As the multimedia intern for the ambitious experiment, the 25-year-old will work alongside scientists to record the event and create a multimedia presentation that will explain its significance to the broader public. With scientists attempting to revolutionise our understanding of matter and the origins of the universe, Phil’s task is not an easy one.
