The school was recently awarded a Coles Junior Landcare Grant valued at $1000 to establish the garden.
Teacher Joy Ogden said the students had been preparing the soil for planting and spending time in the classroom learning about plants and gardening. The students planted several fruit trees, with the indigenous foods set to be planted in the coming weeks.
“This is a fabulous learning experience with many of our students learning first-hand about the food cycle, from seed to plate, and using healthy produce for cooking,” she said.
The program is an extension of the school’s cooking and restaurant programs.
Grade 2 student Maddison said she loved gardening because you got to play as a team.
“When the plants grow, we will get to eat them. We have bananas, red lady apples and peaches,” she said.
