Speedsters nabbed around schools

By Kelly Yates
TRAFFIC police in Casey caught drivers speeding, not wearing seat belts and talking on mobile phones last week as they patrolled the streets for Operation Juno.
Operation Juno was launched by the Casey Traffic Management Unit (TMU) in October in an effort to stop drivers ignoring school zone speed limits.
Police detected 28 offences as they set up outside Cranbourne Park Primary School, Coral Park Primary School in Hampton Park and Oatlands Primary School in Narre Warren for a six-hour period from 7.30am on Wednesday 9 December.
Senior Constable Allen Inderwisch from the Casey TMU said police nabbed 22 drivers speeding through school zones and found two people not wearing seat belts and one female motorist talking on her mobile phone while driving.
“We also discovered an unregistered vehicle and one mother who didn’t have a licence,” he said.
Police say they are disappointed that drivers are still not getting the message about speeding around schools.
“This time of year, it gets really busy around school areas,” he said.
“There’ll be an increase in traffic going in and out of the schools and also more pedestrians around.”
Operation Juno will continue next year.
“Next year, we’ll also look at drivers double parking and people exceeding the parking length at drop off and pick up zones,” Sen Const Inderwisch said.
