Baby comes first for swimmer

Endeavour Hills swimmer Ebony Ebenwaldner had yet another strong finish in the Lorne Pier to Pub eve
PRIORITIES have shifted for former Lorne Pier to Pub winner Ebony Ebenwaldner after the birth of her daughter Isabella in February last year. The 2008 and 2004 open winner was placed eighth in the senior female division on Saturday with a timing of 13.23 minutes.
Ebenwaldner said she had halved her training and only had time to swim once a week while taking care of her daughter.
“Isabella hasn’t been well and has been in and out of hospital all year, so I haven’t had much time to train,” Ebenwaldner said.
“Considering my level of fitness, the result was better than I would have expected and I am happy with it.”
This year was the sixth time Ebenwaldner had completed the race and she hopes to have another go next year.
“Hopefully, I will have a little more time to train this year and as Isabella gets older,” Ebenwaldner said.
Her husband Pete was also pleased with his result this year, coming in 155th in the men’s masters with his best ever time of 15.39 minutes.
What is now the world’s largest open-water swim began as an informal challenge between Lorne lifesavers who dived off Lorne Pier to swim through Louttit Bay and finish on the Lorne foreshore before celebrating at the Lorne Pub. The annual Lorne Pier to Pub swim is now in its 29th year and attracts up to 4300 entrants to swim the 1200 metre course as part of a three-day program that includes the Mountain to Surf Fun Run and the Surf Boat Classic.
