ALMOST 130 past members met at the Doveton Tennis Club last Sunday for a 35-year reunion that organiser Vaughan Smith described as a “huge success.”
“It was great to see so many past players returning from as far as Mackay, the Sunshine Coast and northern Victoria,” Smith said. “Members reminisced about the years during the 1980s when the club was a very competitive force in the Dandenong tennis district.”
The club was established in 1974 on what were originally asphalt courts used by the Doveton Football Club to keep fit.
Current club president Mark Collins welcomed visitors back to the club and invited them to take time to look at how the new-look club is operating.
“In 2010, the Doveton Tennis Club is very much alive and well and when you walk around the venue you will find it in good shape,” Collins said.
Recent improvements at the club include a 100,000-litre water tank, additional court lighting, sealed car park, new barbecue and playground facilities and additional spectator seating.
The club also provided a barbecue lunch and refreshments during the day and made the courts available for social play.
Reunion a smash hit for club
