A BLAZE at a Berwick house has caused more than $100,000 worth of damage.
The fire gutted two bedrooms, an ensuite, wardrobe area and a large section of the roof at a two storey Bournevale Drive home on Tuesday night.
Berwick Fire Brigade captain Alan Boyd said a passerby noticed the top floor was on fire about 9.18pm.
“Finding no-one responding to his knocks at the front door, the man made entry and went up the stairs to try to make sure people were not trapped,” Captain Boyd said. “Intense heat and smoke forced him to retreat.”
Firefighters from Berwick, Beaconsfield and Hallam arrived at the house to find the top floor well alight with the fire breaking out through the tiled roof. They kept the fire contained to several rooms upstairs.
The intense smoke and heat seriously damaged other parts of the house.
The occupants of the house were not home at the time of the fire and were believed to be in the process of renovating the house.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
