FIREFIGHTERS have been praised for preventing 15 shops going up in flames after fire gutted a Narre Warren fish and chip shop last weekend.
About 20 firefighters from Hallam, Berwick, Narre Warren North and Dandenong helped battle the fire at the Rebound Court take-away shop on Saturday, just before 10pm, and brought it under control within 30 minutes.
Protecting nearby shops that were under threat was a priority for the firefighters, Narre Warren Fire Brigade first lieutenant Travis Carter said.
He said the fire had the potential for rapid growth.
“The firefighters were concerned because all of the shops had a joint roof space,” he said.
The shop owner Minh Tu said he was shocked when he heard that his take-away shop had been gutted by the fire.
“I feel lucky no-one was injured,” he said
Mr Tu, who has been running the family business for six years, estimated he would be back open for businesses within two months.
“I hope they remember us here,” he said.
Lieutenant Carter said the crews spent three hours ventilating the other shops after the fire.
The cause of the fire is believed to be an electrical fault.
