Marathon run for the kids

By Kara Irving
CAPTAIN Koala along with members of the Narre Warren Fire Brigade are pounding the pavement in a bid to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital.
This year, a record 38 members from the Narre Warren branch are competing in the ‘Run for the Kids’ marathon on Sunday 14 March.
So far 21 members of the brigade are preparing themselves for the 14.6 kilometre run, which takes competitors through the Domain Tunnel and over the Bolte Bridge before winding its way back through the city.
Seventeen firefighters from the Narre Warren brigade are opting for the milder 5.6 kilometre walk. Team organiser Tony Bundock says the team was hoping to raise up to $10,000 from the event.
“We have a fair mixture of ages in the team,” he said. “Our youngest members are 15, while the NOGs (Narre Old Guys- those over 50) are looking pretty fit.”
Even Captain Koala is on a tight training regime in order to complete the 14.6 kilometre run.
“The captain will be looking to set a personal best time as he plods around the course, and will be assisted by fire-fighters Josh Durdin and Michael Casjni,” said Tony.
The team is working on designing a T-shirt for all participants who are supporting the Narre Warren Fire Brigade . “So even if we can’t run too fast, at least we’ll look good,” Tony said.
