A NARRE Warren North man is hoping to change people’s perception of hoons and car clubs by starting up, what is believed to be, Casey’s first car enthusiasts’ club.
Anthony De Angelis is kicking off the “non hoon” group, the Victoria Car Enthusiasts Association, by organising a car cruise on Anzac Day.
The 21-year-old will take his pride a joy, a 1988 Nissan skyline silhouette, on the cruise to the Mornington Peninsula alongside 25 to 30 other cars taking part in the event.
Mr De Angelis said his car club, which has three registered members so far, was not for hoons.
“The group is for all car enthusiasts, whether they drive a 1980 Commodore or a 2001 Daewoo,” he said.
The group will meet for the cruise at the Casey Lifestyle Centre in Narre Warren at 10am on Sunday 25 April, and hold a minute’s silence at 11am.
Mr De Angelis said he would donate all of the money collected during the cruise to a local RSL club.
Maps of the cruise route will be sold for $3.
He said the aim of the cruise was to support the Anzacs and drum up support for the new Casey-based club.
“I’d like to start building a good connection in the community as there are hundreds of people in the City of Casey who have lovely cars and spend heaps of money on them. I want to bring them all together,” he said.
“People need to know that our car club is not a hoon club. It annoys me how people with nicer cars get labelled as hoons.”
A hoon, in Mr De Angelis’ words, is someone who is out to deliberately disturb traffic by doing burn outs and destroying property.
Mr De Angelis said the police had been notified about this weekend’s cruise.
