Chipping in for Casey kids in crisis

By Bridget Cook
THERE were some crazy sights at Lysterfield Lake on Saturday for the Christians Helping in Primary Schools (CHIPS) inaugural Wacky Walk-A-Thon.
More than 240 people, from 10 months to 70-years-old, dressed in wacky costumes took part in the 6.25 kilometre walk around the lake which kicked off at 10.30am.
About $16,000 was raised for CHIPS, which will go towards helping children in crisis who live in the City of Casey.
CHIPS is a non-profit organisation who work to support and encourage the primary school community.
The Berwick based organisation assists over 10,000 children every year through camps, seminars and programs that empower children, so they can heal and make changes in their lives.
CHIPS charity organiser Eric Wieckmann said the fundraiser went better than expected and everyone got into the spirit.
“There were some great costumes … we had people dressed as Batman, clowns, in kilts and riding uni-cycles,” he said.
Dancers from Seena Bird Academy of Dance performed a ‘cheer leader’ style dance to set the walkers off.
About $5000 worth of donated prizes were given out for categories including fastest time, largest family group, wackiest walker and most amount raised.
Jason Kelaart and Ryan Lucas were the first two competitors across the line and James Breen, from Narre Warren North Primary School, was the fastest child.
The most amount raised through sponsorship was almost $700 by Carley Dale.
